In Which Vivian is Interviewed on Being a Vampire

The last hours of night passed quickly. A Starling student brought them trays of delicious food—spinach pie, buttered bread, roasted carrots, and oatmeal cookies—and clean clothes. The student showed them to the washroom attached to the sanatorium, and the triplets took turns freshening up. They hadn’t had hot water at their apartment in Enola Avenue, and Vivian thought she could stay under the stream of steaming water forever.

A thin line of sunlight appeared on the horizon, and they began closing the curtains to attempt some sleep. They were at the Celestial Academy for Fallen Stars, so they would do as the Starlings did: sleep with the sun and rise with the stars.

Just as they were tucking into their beds, the door to the sanatorium opened, letting in a burst of light from the hallway.

“How are my favorite triplets doing?” came the sing-song voice of Khalid Ali Bagheeri.

Vivian took a deep breath at his approach. What’s he doing here? They had been so careful for three years, but this person, one of the most important political figures in Thraina, had figured out her secret.

Whatever he had said to Marion had been enough to convince her to come here. And Vivian knew just how difficult it was to convince Marion of anything at all.

“What are you doing here?” Marion stood and put her hands on her hips.

“Think of me as your personal welcoming committee.” He flashed a too-perfect grin. With his mop of wavy black hair, green eyes, and warm brown skin, Khalid was disarmingly handsome. Vivian wondered if that had anything to do with her sister’s willingness to listen to him. But based on Marion’s scowl, she wasn’t going to be swayed, even by a charming noble.

Khalid strolled in and placed a hand on Timothée’s shoulder as if they were old pals. Her brother blushed. “I thought I’d check and make sure you’re being taken care of.”

“It’s good you’ve come,” Marion said sternly. “There’s no time like the present.”

Khalid ran a hand through his dark hair. “For what? A tour? A recount of my life? A date, perhaps?”

Marion forced him to on a bed. “For a cure. You told me if we came to the Academy, you would help us. So, talk. What do you know, Mr. Ali Bagheeri?”
