Everyone knew the stories of the Starlings who let the star rule over the heart. It made sense, of course, that magic born so close to the heart could be manipulated by one’s emotions. It was what made Morning Stars and Evening Stars so powerful. Morning Stars prided themselves on finding peace beyond passion, always searching for serenity while summoning starcraft. Evening Stars, on the other hand, honed their emotions into a fervour, using passion as power.
It was why Dark Stars could not be trusted with their magic and had it locked by the enchanted chokers; they were too temperamental by nature.
But any Starling could let their star grow too strong. Any Starling could feel anger too hot, sadness too cold, love too bright.
Any Starling could let the star burn them from the inside out.
And Marion thought that might just be happening to her right now.
She stayed perfectly still, watching as her sister disappeared down the hallway, and Timothée enter a stairwell that would lead him to the Cauldron. Stayed perfectly still even as Khalid squirmed and shifted beside her.
She needed to clear her head. Think about what the sentient castle had offered them. Come up with a plan to steal Kassandra’s staff. Start research on some goddamned sword that could break the goddamn staff that would free this goddamn being from this goddamn castle.
But she was just so angry.
Khalid hadn’t lied to her outright. She’d never asked him if he’d offer Vivian his blood.
But he hadn’t told her, either. It was a lie by omission.
Somehow, she was able to wretch her eyes up from the dark floor and look at him. A green-eyed gaze doing a perfect impression of a kicked puppy.
“Ah, come on, Mare.” Khalid threw a hand behind his head. He was still dressed in his Yuletide finery, black gloves tight on nimble fingers. “It’s been a long night and it’s almost dawn. Let’s get some rest and—”
“You knew what I would say,” she whispered. “You went behind my back anyway.”
Khalid scrubbed his face with his gloved hands. “Yes, I knew what you would say. Yes, I went behind your back.” He sighed, dropped his arms to his side. “What do you want from me? I was trying to help.”
Fury hot as fire seized in Marion’s chest. Her palms grew warm, and her words came out a whispered snarl: “If you were trying to help, you would have told me you were going to offer your blood up to a vampire.”
Feral anger flashed across Khalid’s face, and he whispered back in his rough sneer, “That vampire is your sister. And I didn’t realize I had to ask you. Did Vivian lose her bodily autonomy when she got bit protecting you?”
Marion stepped back as if stricken. “How dare you.”
Khalid snorted. “I’m done. Do you know what I’ve risked helping you? I’m not going to stand here to be scolded.” He turned and stormed down the hallway.
But the fire inside was too hot, too raging. Marion marched after him. “You think you can guilt me about my sister? I would do anything to help her. Who do you even think you are? I barely know you.”
Khalid flipped around, pushed Marion against the hallway wall. “Barely know me, eh? You seemed to know me just fine on the dancefloor tonight when you were slamming your lips into mine.”
Marion’s face heated and she wondered if any Morning Star had ever wept tears of fire. “Well, that won’t happen again.”
